Lower Lufira Research Project: students from University of Lubumbashi defending their thesis

By bf@kipay inNews

October 2021, Lubumbashi, DRC

KIPAY is proud to congratulate Johnny NSOMPO MUTELO with his master’s in engineering chemistry and Dany NTAMBWE KASONGO with his bachelor’s in mathematical sciences from the University of Lubumbashi. Earlier this week they defended their thesis.

The Lower Lufira Research Project is an interdisciplinary research project between the discipline’s biology, geology, mathematics, and chemistry. This academic project focuses on topics related to river ecology and sedimentation caused by hydropower dams.

Research has been carried out since March 2021, the project leader Prof Dr Mikael Monga from University of Lubumbashi has guided six master and bachelor students from the University of Lubumbashi. The students have been conducting their field studies along the Lower Lufira River in close guidance with professors and leading scientists.

The Lower Lufira Research project is an independent research project sponsored by KIPAY.

Master in engineering science
Johnny NSOMPO MUTELO
Department  of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Lubumbashi

Tutors : Professor Dr Jean-Marie KANDA and Professor Dr Mikael MONGA
Jury members: Professor Emmanuel LUKUMU et Professor Christophe MPIANA
Master thesis title: Hydrochemical study and impact analysis of the hydroelectric dam on the physico-chemical quality of the waters of the third section of the Lufira river (Sombwe project)

The objectives of Johnny’s master thesis have been to identify and quantify the different compounds contained in the Lower Lufira River. He has established characteristic equations for various parameters, analyzed the correlation and interconnection between the different parameters; and carried out an impact analysis of the hydroelectric dam on the physic-chemical water quality in the Lower Lufira River. To achieve these objectives, a precise methodology was put in place, ranging from sampling to the processing of analytical results.

Bachelor in Mathematical Sciences
Dany NTAMBWE KASONGO
Department of Mathematics and Informatics, Faculty of Science, University of Lubumbashi

Tutor: Professor Didier KUMWIMBA
Jury members: Professor NDONDO Appolinaire and Assistant BADIBI Omak
Bachelor thesis title: Solving the Navier-Stokes equations and turbulence phenomena: the incompressible fluids.

Danny’s bachelor thesis is based on the Navier-Stokes equations describing how the velocity, pressure, temperature, and density of a moving fluid are related. He is researching digital simulation in three dimensions based on data from the Lufira River.  He is using the Navier-Stokes equation as a guide for the sedimentation process of solid particles in fluids. Danny will continue this project as a master student by doing 3D modeling of the turbulence phenomena, a modeling that will predict the sedimentation for hydropower projects.
