Project Tôles Malaki

Metal sheets vs beans

csr_tolesExhange

The villagers in Kalera may not have much money, but they do have access to natural resources, such as land that can be used for agriculture.
One of Kipay’s early aims has been to stimulate and empower the farmers so they can increase their yields. It has approached this by:

  • Creating a financial instruments that enable farmers to transform their assets into sustainable capital
  • Supporting and stimulating co-operative self-organizing for the sustainable development increased production.

In 2018 Kipay took up an idea proposed by the villagers of Kalera to initiate a program for exchanging beans for metal sheets for houses. The swift and successful implementation of this simple but eective programme has boosted optimism about the hydropower plan in Kalera and has already resulted in increased agricultural yields. The initiative prevents deforestation, protection of biodiversity and increases understanding of ecosystem services. These are the fruits of participation and empowerment.
