Renewable Energy

WHAT WE DO

As a long-term investor we are committed to develop and make lasting economic, social and environmental contributions to the societies in which we operate.
We recognize that power generation is a prerequisite for development, particularly in our area where modern power is in acute shortage.

Hydro Power

Meeting local energy needs will contribute to poverty reduction and stimulate economic growth across the country. DRC has considerable hydropower potential of which only 2% is used. Hydropower represents the cleanest and most cost-effective source of energy in the country, as such the deficit of energy sources are a significant obstacle to investment and job creation. At present, an estimated 1% of the rural DRC population can access electricity.

Location

The DRC has energy resources with significant exploitable potential, the most important of which is hydroelectric power. This represents a total exploitable power of around 100,000 MW, 44% of which is concentrated in a single site, Inga. The rest of the sites are scattered throughout the territory and 890 have been identified by the Ministry of Hydraulic Resources.

Hybrid Energy Solution

Kipay’s Sombwe project offers a Hybrid Energy Solutions to ensure a stable supply of electricity to our offtakes. From the combination of hybrid solar and hydropower, these renewable systems can drive vital stability to the grid and solving critical needs. Renewable Energy Hybrids are the solution to a reliable, affordable and dispatchable integration of renewable energies.

The province of Haut-Katanga has a significant energy potential through which flows important rivers, from west to east and from south to north, characterized by falls and rapids with significant flows. However, this province is also characterized by a large deficit in electrical energy due to the imbalance between an increasing supply and demand. This imbalance is mainly due to the development of economic activities, especially in the mining and real estate sectors, and to population growth.
